the 'free state' marches for fair food

lawrence, kansas -April 11-13, 2008

From KU, recent national champions in NCAA men's basketball...

...to our own champions, Lawrence Fair Food...

...the recent trip of SFA and CIW members to Lawrence, Kansas provided us the opportunity to learn some history, connect with friends old and new alike, and plant more seeds of consciousness about farm labor conditions in the US today and the connection that exists between farmworkers and consumers, such as in the above pictured class at Lawrence High School.

A spectre was haunting the grounds of KU as our march to BK stepped off: A creepier than usual -- albeit, we think, more accurate -- depiction of "the king."

But the march to BK that day, and Lawrence's local petition drive, hearken back to other figures who once lived and fought in the tumultuous hills of eastern Kansas - abolitionists and 'free staters.'

Arriving at the Burger King, our march was greeted -- and towered over -- by the king himself, who was too busy relishing in his own power to see the hordes of increasingly angry consumers circling below...

...who finally successfully dethroned the despot with tomato vines of justice and brought the rally to a close with messages of solidarity and a manager letter delivery.

Check out coverage from the action below, and more great pics here.
