usas action at chipotle headquarters

August 8, 2008 - Denver, CO

As Chipotle continues to ignore calls for real reform in its tomato supply chain, over one hundred USAS members from around the country, in Colorado for the USAS summer conference, descended on the company's Denver headquarters.

With Chipotle's ongoing refusal to even meet with the CIW as a backdrop, the students mobilized to demand respect - and action - from the burrito chain.

The action kicked of with a picket that swarmed in front of this downtown Chipotle restaurant....

...before taking to the streets and marching to the corporation's nearby headquarters.

Upon arrival, this delegation was formed to carry the students' voices in the form of this letter to Chipotle executives. The group was made up of representatives from USAS, SFA, Student Labor Action Project, Movimiento Estudantil Chicano/a de Aztlan, and Jobs With Justice.

After an unsuccessful attempt to take the elevator to the second-floor office (apparently some new security measures have been put into place since our last visit), the undeterred delegation climbed this back stairway to knock on Chipotle's door...

...only to receive this decidedly inhospitable reception from Tim Spong, "LP Director" for Chipotle. After a little persistence, however, he relented and invited the delegation in for an unsurprisingly brief and nonrelevatory chat.

Meanwhile, the action continued outside (as seen in this photo taken from inside the halls of Chipotle) and the cries for fair food formed an unignorable backdrop as the delegation presented its concerns.

The delegation returned with no answers from Chipotle, further calling into question its commitment to "Food With Integrity..."

...and confirming once again that this commitment still does not include the one component that would make it complete: real rights for farmworkers.

The action continued, posing some serious questions...

...and simple demands.

As the boisterous action wound down, participants marked their home communities on a blown-up map of Chipotle restaurant locations. At the action's conclusion, the map was also delivered to Chipotle, putting the company on notice that the pressure would continue, coast to coast, in the weeks and months ahead.

The rally was brought to an official close by Angelica Franco (r) of MEChA de Auraria (Denver) and local USAS'er Claudia Ebel, symbolizing the ever-growing alliance and friendship between our organizations that started with the launch of the Taco Bell Boycott and continues as we stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the struggle for dignity from the fields to our campuses.

Unfortunately, and despite its own noble-sounding marketing rhetoric, Chipotle continues to refuse to be part of the solution to the endemic degradation of farmworkers who bring tomatoes to the tables of restaurants across the country. But, as Friday's action showed, young consumers are not so easily duped and will continue to take action until "Food With Integrity" includes "Work With Dignity."
