Dear XXXX,

Greetings from Fair Food Austin! We are a local network of allies and advocates that organize in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), through working on a shared Campaign for Fair Food. The CIW is a community-based organization of mainly Latino, Mayan Indian and Haitian immigrants working in low-wage jobs throughout the state of Florida. The CIW, with the support of ally groups like Fair Food Austin, has taken on some of the biggest fast food conglomerates in the world, securing agreements with nine corporations to ensure an end to human rights abuses and poverty wages for farmworkers. The CIW has aided the Department of Justice in successfully prosecuting seven slavery operations, resulting in the liberation of well over 1,000 workers.

Brutal conditions in Florida's fields may seem distant to consumers deep in the heart of Texas, but many of the restaurant and supermarket chains that have helped create this crisis are present in our community and buy Florida tomatoes. Currently, Fair Food Austin, along with other ally groups across the nation, is working to mobilize a strong showing in (Boston/Tampa) for the “Do the Right Thing Tour,” which culminates in a major march and rally on (Ahold/Publix), one of the largest grocery store chains in the nation. Despite nearly two years of serious campaigning and joint efforts by workers, consumers, and thousands of allies across the nation, Publix refuses to meet with the CIW.

“If there are some atrocities going on, it’s not our business,” said Publix’s Media and Community Relations Manager Dwaine Stevens.

The Campaign for Fair Food is at a historic juncture, and this is one of the most important mobilizations the CIW has called in years. Please see www.ciw-online.org/dotherightthing for more information.

Fair Food Austin is mobilizing low-wage workers and student allies to march in Tampa on March 5, and we need all the support we can get from our allies in the community to make it to (Boston/Tampa). Please see attached sponsorship levels, and help support one of the most inspirational workers’ rights movements in the country.

With deep appreciation for the work your organization does for our community here in Austin, we thank you in advance for considering participant sponsorship for this important national mobilization.

In Solidarity,

Fair Food Austin
